Message from the President

Happy New Year!


Welcome to 2022. With all that happened in 2020 and 2021, I feel cautious optimism tempered by a tiny bit of anxiety and plenty of tenacity. We’ve been witnessing the awakening of our nation to the realities of inequity and injustice that pervade our society. We’ve seen the crumbling of systems of oppression, some spontaneous and some at the hands of staunch advocates. We’ve been engaged in the work of creating and humanizing, and in helping to shape a more just and equitable society. Make no mistake, the work is only beginning. But we’re making headway like never before.


As you read through this month’s newsletter, you’ll notice the state and national health policy recaps–we’ve seen so many successes in 2021! I hope this brief reality check offers you energy, inspiration, and fierce hope.

California Health Policy


Happy New Year! We have lots to celebrate from 2021, including the Midwifery Workforce Training Act in SB 65, our work on Governor Newsom's Future of Abortion Council (see final report here), and our selection as one of the state teams participating in the Institute for Medicaid Innovation's Midwifery Learning Collaborative. We are heading into a busy year of more legislation and policy work, so stay tuned for more to come. CNMA would like to thank those who helped our policy work along through grassroots efforts, phone calls, emails, and more (we can't do this work without you!), and for the work of our Health Policy Committee.



National Health Policy


  • H.R. 5487, the Stillbirth Health Improvement and Education (SHINE) for Autumn Act passed the House, 408 – 18, on December 8. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA-03) introduced the bill with the intent to lower the U.S. stillbirth rate by providing critical resources to state and federal health departments, improving data collection, and increasing education and awareness around the issue of stillbirth in the United States.

  • On December 7, Vice President Kamala Harris hosted the Maternal Health Day of Action.

  • H.R.951, the Maternal Vaccination Act, passed the House on November 30. The bill would establish a national campaign to raise awareness and increase rates of maternal vaccinations.

  • On November 30, President Joe Biden signed S. 796, The Protecting Moms Who Served Act. The bill mandates improvements to maternity care in the Veterans’ Health Administration.

  • The Biden-Harris administration’s Title X Family Planning Program rule went into effect in November. The new rule will restore access to family planning services and replace a 2019 Trump administration introduced rule that effectively barred any facility or program that provides abortions or abortion referrals from receiving federal funds through the Family Planning Program.

Abortion

In December 2021, the FDA announced that the REMS must be modified by removing the in-person dispensing requirement. Removing the in-person dispensing requirement will allow, for example, dispensing of mifepristone by mail via certified prescribers or pharmacies, in addition to in-person dispensing in clinics, medical offices, and hospitals as currently outlined in the Mifepristone Rems Program. Breastfeeding

On October 22, the U.S. House passed H.R. 3110, Providing Urgent Maternal Protections (PUMP) for Nursing Mothers Act by 276 to 149. The bill would extend required break times for nursing mothers to salaried workers. The strong bipartisan support bodes well for a successful vote in the Senate.


Budget and Appropriations

On November 19, the House passed 220 – 213, the Build Back Better Act (H.R. 5376)—a budget reconciliation bill.



Practice Updates



ACNM Scope of Practice Document

ACNM is excited to announce the release of the revision of the ACNM Scope of Practice Document, "Definition of Midwifery and Scope of Practice of Certified Nurse-Midwives and Certified Midwives." The Scope of Practice (SOP) enumerates the primary clinical functions that define the breadth and depth of midwifery.


2021 Practice Guidelines for PrEP

The CDC has just released updated Clinical Practice Guidelines to incorporate recent FDA PrEP medication approvals and to clarify specific aspects of clinical care. Get the latest science and information to effectively prescribe PrEP for HIV prevention.


DEA Guidance

Pursuant to 28 CFR 50.26 and 50.27, newly approved guidance has been posted to the Guidance Document Portal and Question & Answers sections on the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Diversion Control Division website. The guidance is also accessible on the Department of Justice Guidance Portal.


Volunteer Opportunities


Support Survivors of Forced Sterilization

The California Coalition for Women Prisoners and California Latinas for Reproductive Justice are looking for clinicians to support survivors of forced sterilization by reviewing medical charts in search of information relating to sterilizations, tubal ligations, hysterectomies, etc., in addition to patient consent, or lack thereof. ACNM Clinical Standards and Documents (CSD) Committee

Volunteers work to write and revise ACNM documents that affect midwifery practice. Members are responsible for participating in revisions, updates, editing, and creation of new documents. ACNM Division of Global Health (DGE) Chair

The ACNM DGE is composed of active and involved ACNM member volunteers who, as global citizens, promote understanding of the reciprocal benefits of working with diverse communities around the world. Postpartum Support International California Chapter Board Member

PSI State Chapters advance the mission of PSI on the state level and help to build systems that support families while also increasing access to education and treatment for perinatal mental health. Call for Submissions: Postpartum Support International


The 35th Annual Postpartum Support International Conference will take place in New Orleans, LA, July 13-17, 2022. Both didactic and experiential proposals for breakouts will be accepted, in addition to the poster submissions. The annual PSI conference provides an opportunity to meet, learn together, and share ideas with others involved in the field of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). Submissions are due by January 6, 2022.


Education, Trainings, and Webinars


CNMA Supports the Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth e-Training

It’s a startling fact that, in 2021, Black birthing women are four to six times as likely to die from pregnancy and birth-related causes as other racial and ethnic groups. To help perinatal providers learn more about the implicit biases that are among the key causes of this disparity, CNMA supports using the Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth e-training course. This one-hour, no-cost course – funded by the California Health Care Foundation – also meets the requirements of Senate Bill 464, which mandates that all perinatal providers in California take an evidence-based implicit bias training. Othering & Belonging Institute Summer Fellowship

The Othering & Belonging Institute Summer Fellowship is a paid research experience for individuals seeking to develop their research skills by engaging with the Institute’s multidisciplinary research, analysis, policy, and strategic narrative work. The purpose of the fellowship is to build the capacity and network of the next generation of researchers and community leaders who are committed to social and racial justice by providing mentorship and hands-on experience with social science research. Gold Midwifery Online Conference

The GOLD Midwifery Online Conference will take place February 1 - March 31, 2022. GOLD Midwifery 2022 offers 16.5 Hours of continuing education. MEAC Midwifery CEUs (0.1 Equivalent to 1 NARM CEU), ACNM CEUs, ACM CPD Recognised Hours, and CERPs are applied for. Register here.


2020 Mom/PSI

Registration is open for the 2020 Mom/PSI 8 class bi-weekly course in maternal mental health, starting Monday, February 28, 2022. Classes are two hours and prepare clinicians for the PSI board test for the new specialty designation in Perinatal Mental Health. Scholarships are limited to United States applicants only. Share with Women


The newest Share with Women handouts address bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, genital herpes, hepatitis C, pertussis, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, and vulvovaginal candidiasis. More than 110 midwifery-authored patient education handouts are available at www.sharewithwomen.org. All of the Share with Women collection is free to read and download so midwives can share these handouts with patients.



Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program


The Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program (Nurse Corps LRP) application cycle is now open through January 13, 2022. This year, there is special funding for nurse practitioners specializing in women’s health. The Nurse Corps LRP has allocated up to $5 million for applicants working as women’s health nurse practitioners (NPs), certified nurse midwives, or certified RNs in obstetrics and gynecology. The purpose of this special funding is to expand the nursing workforce to critical shortage facilities to provide care to women. Eligible applicants are encouraged to attend the Nurse Corps Technical Assistance Webinar on Thursday, January 6 from 11:30 AM - 1 PM PST.

The Certified Nurse Midwives of Kaiser Napa Solano are hiring an additional midwife, and we are eager to diversify our workforce. Our practice is honored to care for birthing people and families from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We attend births at our hospitals in Vallejo and Vacaville. ACNM Director of Education

The Education Director is responsible for reporting to the CEO, this role will lead the development and delivery of a strong curriculum of professional development programs for ACNM members. Principal focus will be developing high-quality interactive learning experiences for in-person, virtual and hybrid programs and courses for a clinical caregiver audience. Working closely with subject matter experts, volunteer member committees, staff content leads and other stakeholders, the Director of Education will oversee all phases of program and course design using best practices from learning sciences, instructional design, learning technologies and project management to deliver exceptional quality programs and courses. The Medi-Cal Rx Monthly Bulletin for December is now available. The monthly bulletin consists of alerts and notices posted to the Bulletins & News page on the Medi-Cal Rx Web Portal. Sign up for the Medi-Cal Rx Subscription Service to be notified when new information is posted.


Beginning January 1,2022, Magellan Medicaid Administration, Inc. (MMA) assumed operations for Medi-Cal Rx on behalf of the State of California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Pharmacy providers and prescribers now must be enrolled as Medi-Cal participating providers in order to provide pharmacy benefits to Medi-Cal beneficiaries, including submitting Medi-Cal Rx pharmacy PAs and claims. Confirm your Medi-Cal enrollment via the California Health and Human Services Open Data Portal under Profile of Enrolled Medi-Cal Fee-for-Service (FFS) Providers. and access the Provider Application and Validation for Enrollment (PAVE) website to begin the process of becoming a Medi-Cal provider. Message from the President


Midwife means “with woman.” Not to woman, for woman, or at woman. “With.”

I’ve been thinking a lot about what this means lately.


Our country and this planet are facing an existential crisis in the form of an apocalypse. But did you know that the word apocalypse comes from the Greek word meaning “an uncovering?” An apocalypse is an opportunity to see what we would otherwise not see. We can no longer avert our eyes. These past months and years have uncovered intolerable racial injustices, sexism, caste, and abuse. Our planet is telling us of its suffering in terms of fires and floods. The pandemic is illustrating the shortcomings in our nation’s promises to promote the general welfare. And yet… eyes are opening and we are learning.


The feminine principle is born from a place of working with one another, of compassion and cooperation rather than competition. I see the pendulum swinging toward groups working in harmony to support and heal and nurture one another. I see CNMA’s role in this as being heavily committed to cooperation and participation. We’ve succeeded in passing three bills in the past few years--after years--decades--of trying without success. But we haven’t done this alone. We’ve become successful through partnering with coalitions and following BIPOC leadership. Rather than controlling or dominating, we’ve midwifed our siblings in coalition and uplifted our partners rather than vying for spotlights. We’ve been with.


I feel exhilarated as we approach the tipping points toward justice, equity, and harmony on this planet. I see a future where gentle cooperation and fierce and inexhaustible love for one another will bring the light we’ve been looking for. I know it will require all of us, working with each other, together in this. I hope you’ll join us either in person or virtually this weekend at the CNMA annual meeting for inspiration and a look toward the future of midwifery in this state. We’ve come a long way very quickly, and now is the time to create and work toward our share shared vision together.

California Health Policy Update

Future of Abortion Council

As we wind down the legislative calendar for 2021, we are pleased to announce that CNMA has been invited to participate in California’s Future of Abortion Council. The Governor has charged the FAB Council with identifying barriers to abortion access and recommending policy proposals and solutions to legislators. CNMA is advising in two work groups: (1) Workforce and (2) Services, Coverage and Reimbursement. Click here to find out more. Advocacy Opportunities

Federal Abortion Cases

On Monday Nov 1, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in two challenges to the Texas abortion law (SB 8). The two cases are Whole Woman’s Health v. Jackson and United States v. Texas. The court agreed to hear both cases before the court of appeals has fully weighed in, and they ordered an accelerated schedule for briefing and arguments, which is exceedingly rare. What Women Want: Midwives’ Voices, Midwives Demands

What Women Want: Midwives' Voices, Midwives' Demands is a survey asking midwives about what they want and need to serve women in their care better and for themselves as midwives. Survey results will inform the development of targeted advocacy agendas at the national and global levels – to be taken forward not only by local midwives' associations, the International Confederation of Midwives, and White Ribbon Alliance, but also by gender equality, human rights, and other champions – to create real, lasting, positive change for midwives and women all over the world. ACNM Virtual Hill Day

We invite all ACNM members and midwives to make their voices heard at ACNM’s Inaugural Virtual Hill Day experience on Monday, November 15, 2021. During this advocacy event, you will meet virtually with Members of Congress and their health policy staff from your respective state to educate them about midwives, midwifery-led care, and how to improve maternal health outcomes and address racism and inequities within our nation’s care continuum. This event will help elevate the strategic priorities of the college and the immediate needs of midwives and midwifery practices nationwide and the people and families midwives serve. ACNM Virtual Health Policy Summit

The BABIES Act and Midwives for MOMS Act

AABC is making it easy to build momentum and advance these important pieces of legislation. Click here for information on how to contact your congressional representatives and senators via phone or email. The BABIES Act (H.R.3337/S.1716) seeks to promote the accessible and affordable use of freestanding birth centers by Medicaid beneficiaries. It would build off the Strong Start initiative by creating a demonstration payment program under Medicaid and providing guidance to develop a prospective payment system to reimburse birth centers for prenatal care, perinatal care, and postpartum mother and infant care. The Midwives for MOMS Act (H.R.3352/S.1697) is designed to expand educational opportunities for midwives by establishing two new funding streams for midwifery education. Additionally, the bill will address the significant lack of diversity in the maternity care workforce by prioritizing students from minority or disadvantaged backgrounds.


Encourage FDA to maintain access to preterm birth prevention options

Preterm birth disproportionately affects ethnically diverse parents, yet clinical research on treatment impact often leaves diverse communities underrepresented. The FDA is considering a proposed withdrawal of Makena® (a hydroxyprogesterone caproate injection commonly referred to as “17P”) and its generic versions despite being the only FDA-approved class of treatments for spontaneous, recurrent preterm birth. The Preterm Birth Prevention Alliance, of which AABC is a member, believes that the FDA must hear directly from the providers who treat these at-risk women day in and day out, and is coordinating a sign-on letter which will be submitted to the federal docket to highlight the need for access to 17P. Join fellow midwives, nurses and doulas to encourage the FDA to maintain access to 17P as a therapeutic option for preventing preterm birth, while studying its impact on diverse at-risk populations.

San Francisco Bay Area Chapter Chair

San Francisco Bay Area Midwives! We are seeking a new chapter chair (or co-chairs) to take over for the Bay Area Chapter. Duties of the chapter chair include presiding at all chapter meetings, maintaining communication among chapter members and with CNMA, and developing a plan/agenda for chapter meetings. BIPOC CNMs are especially invited to apply, as CNMA is actively working to bring more BIPOC CNMs into leadership positions throughout the state. This is an exciting role which will allow you to promote networking and engagement among your fellow local area midwives. You will be supported by your fellow leadership team (vice chair, secretary, and treasurer) as well as by CNMA who is here to help you every step of the way! Communications Committee

The social media team needs help creating content for the CNMA platforms! Can you help? Here is what is involved:

Seeking Assistant Membership Chair!

The CNMA Membership Chair is seeking someone to fill an assistant membership chair role. The membership chair is responsible for communications with new and existing members as well as developing new and creative ways to increase membership and improve engagement. I am looking for someone to take part in brainstorming and carrying out ideas, as well as assisting with tasks such as emailing and updating membership records. This role can be tailored to fit your interests and skills. If you have a desire to help shape the future of our organization please contact Emily Carter at ercarterRN@gmail.com.


Continuing Education Committee

The CNMA Continuing Education Committee is responsible for planning and hosting the CNMA Annual Meeting each year, and is now taking on the added responsibility of creating continuing education content that will be available through www.CNMA.org (coming soon!). Please consider joining this small and focused team. The work is targeted and specific, but there’s still plenty of room for creativity. Interested members, please contact jillcauley4@gmail.com.


Midwifery Workforce Development and Education Support Committee

This new committee will focus on building and diversifying the CNM workforce in California, including strategizing to increase the number of clinical placement sites and preceptors in California, establishing and maintaining two-way communication between midwifery programs that have student nurse-midwives in California and the CNMA Board of Directors, and fostering and supporting student mentoring programs. They will work alongside the Student Representatives to the CNMA Board of Directors. Ideal candidates include any of the following:

  • Lead and Chief Midwives from practices throughout the state

  • At least one representative from each midwifery program that has student midwives in California

  • Midwives who are passionate about supporting students and educators

  • Midwives who are passionate about mentoring

Survey to Support the Very Young


The School of Information (iSchool) and the College of Nursing at Kent State University are conducting a research study, Project SHIELD (Supporting Healthy Infant Early Learning and Development), to explore ways librarians and nurses can work with parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers from underserved communities to support early brain development, learning, and health. As a first step in the study, we are conducting a survey of healthcare practitioners who care for families with children, ages 0-24 months, to understand the different ways they support families with children ages 0-24 months. The survey should take around 20-30 minutes. All responses are anonymous and the study has been approved by the Kent State University IRB. Click HERE to complete the survey.

ACNM COVID-19 Patient Handout

The Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health (JMWH) team has updated the COVID-19 Share with Women patient education handouts and added a new one on COVID-19 vaccines.


Evidence Based Birth Handout: COVID-19 Vaccines and Pregnancy

Evidence Based Birth has released a FREE printable patient handout on the COVID-19 vaccine in pregnancy. Birth workers and healthcare workers are welcome to print off the vaccine handout to share with clients or co-workers. The handout will be updated from time to time, and you can subscribe to receive the latest version of the handout here.


BIPOC Midwives Promote COVID Vaccine

California Health Care Foundation is looking for BIPOC midwives to be part of a video campaign to promote covid vaccination. Please email Christa Sakowski at csakowski@stanford.edu for more information.

Electronic Prescribing and AB 2789

Beginning January 1, 2022, all prescriptions issued by a licensed healthcare practitioner to a California pharmacy must be submitted electronically. Healthcare practitioners who fail to meet the requirements of AB 2789, may be subject to disciplinary action. The law provides certain exemptions, including if transmission of the prescription is temporarily unavailable because of technological or electrical failure; if the prescription is dispensed by a pharmacy located outside California; or if the prescription is issued to a patient who has a terminal illness pursuant to Section 11159.2 of the Health and Safety Code. The complete list of exemptions is included within Business and Professions Code section 688. Under this law, a healthcare practitioner who does not issue a controlled substance prescription as an electronic data transmission prescription due to technological or electrical failure shall document the reason in the patient’s medical record as soon as practicable, and within 72 hours of the end of the technological or electrical failure. Although prescriptions will be issued electronically, the Board or Registered Nursing recommends that all licensed prescribers have paper prescription forms available that meet the requirements of AB 149 should a technological or electrical failure prevent a prescription from being issued electronically. Mandatory Use of Single Sheet DEA 222 Order Form

As of October 30, 2021, the Drug Enforcement Administration is implementing the mandatory use of a single sheet DEA 222 Order Form and the triplicate DEA Order Forms will no longer be available or utilized as stated in the Code of Federal Regulations §1305.20(a). If you are needing to place an order for the newly implemented DEA Order Forms, please complete your request here. If you need to relinquish unused triplicate DEA Order Forms, please send them to DEA Registration Section, 8701 Morrissette Drive, Springfield, Virginia 22152.

Evidence to Application Summit: Utilizing low-dose aspirin to reduce pre-eclampsia

The National Association for Public Health Statistics and Information Systems (NAPHIS) has recently updated their FREE online course, Applying Best Practices for Reporting Medical and Health Information on Birth Certificates, in collaboration with the CDC National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). This course is intended for anyone who is responsible for recording and/or gathering birth and fetal death record information, including midwives, physicians, nurses, and medical records staff. The course provides training on how to collect and record accurate information on births and fetal deaths, as well as providing awareness of the importance of quality data. Preventing Racial and Ethnic Biases During Pandemics and Other Crises

To empower health care personnel to provide equitable care during crises like COVID-19, Diversity Science, a professional services firm focused on accelerating progress towards diversity, equity, and inclusion in health care, has developed three free online training courses tailored to physicians, nurses, and nonclinical frontline staff. The National Partnership for Women & Families has joined the National Birth Equity Collaborative to produce the Saving the Lives of Moms & Babies series. The 10-part series connects the dots between how different socioeconomic factors affect maternal and infant health, the outsize impact these factors have on Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) communities, and recommendations to effect the change we need to ensure all moms and babies thrive. Santa Rosa Birth Center urgently seeks additional CNMs to join our team! We are celebrating our 28th anniversary of full-scope reproductive health, prenatal, postpartum and lactation support in California's 2nd oldest freestanding birth center. We attend births at our fully licensed and CABC accredited birth center and at two local, Level II hospitals. Our population is primarily publicly funded, with ~80% of clients receiving Medi-Cal. Our practice is collaborative and BUSY. Each CNM plays an integral role in the functioning of the birth center and must be willing to participate in both clinical and administrative responsibilities. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a joint, in-and-out of hospital setting, but isn't for the faint of heart. One year of experience in full-scope practice is preferred but we will consider strong new grads willing to work independently. Overall, we seek a candidate with a desire to promote community based midwifery care via an integrated midwifery model. The position is for a full-time CNM but would entertain part-time or per diem for the right candidate. Sepsis Advisory Board Member

CNMA has been asked to identify a midwife with interest in infection/sepsis and/or disparities reduction to join a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional clinical advisory board for an NIH grant set in CA and MI to reduce morbidity from sepsis and to reduce disparities. There is a modest compensation for time. The commitment includes four to six 1-hour meetings via Zoom, for 3-4 years. California Innovates to Bring More Midwives to Medi-Cal Recipients!


The California Nurse-Midwives Association is excited to announce that California has been selected as one of the first five states to engage in an innovative 3-year learning collaborative convened by the Institute for Medicaid Innovation. This collaborative is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and will bring together multiple stakeholders who collectively seek to improve birth equity through the development of sustainable initiatives to advance midwifery-led models of care for the Medicaid population in their communities. CNMA is partnering with Best Start Birth Center, Beach Cities Midwifery, Antelope Valley Birth Center, Midtown Birth Center, Santa Rosa Birth Center, San Francisco Birth Center, Loving Way Midwifery, Eisner Health, the California Nurse-Midwives Foundation, the California Affiliate of the American Association of Birth Centers, Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, L.A. Care Health Plan, Los Angeles Department of Public Health, the African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Initiative (AAIMM, represented by stakeholders at the Black Maternal Health Center of Excellence at Charles R. SB 65 California Momnibus Bill and Midwifery Workforce Training


SB 65 (Skinner), the California Momnibus bill is officially off to the Governor’s desk having passed the Assembly (77-0!) last Thursday with a concurrence vote in the Senate Friday!! This means we are only one step away from creating the Midwifery Workforce Training Act in California (among other awesome changes)! If SB 65 is signed into law, next year’s focus will be to get this midwifery training section funded by the legislature. While our vote count was great, we do have opposition from the Department of Finance, in particular because the Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review committee portion of the bill was not included in the budget, so a Governor signature is not guaranteed. San Francisco Bay Area Midwives! We are seeking a new chapter chair (or co-chairs) to take over for the Bay Area Chapter. Duties of the chapter chair include presiding at all chapter meetings, maintaining communication among chapter members and with CNMA, and developing a plan/agenda for chapter meetings. BIPOC CNMs are especially invited to apply, as CNMA is actively working to bring more BIPOC CNMs into leadership positions throughout the state. This is an exciting role which will allow you to promote networking and engagement among your fellow local area midwives. You will be supported by your fellow leadership team (vice chair, secretary, and treasurer) as well as by CNMA who is here to help you every step of the way! Midwifery Workforce Development and Education Support Committee


This new committee will focus on building and diversifying the CNM workforce in California, including strategizing to increase the number of clinical placement sites and preceptors in California, establishing and maintaining two-way communication between midwifery programs that have student nurse-midwives in California and the CNMA Board of Directors, and fostering and supporting student mentoring programs. They will work alongside the Student Representatives to the CNMA Board of Directors. Ideal candidates include any of the following:

  • Lead and Chief Midwives from practices throughout the state

  • At least one representative from each midwifery program that has student midwives in California

  • Midwives who are passionate about supporting students and educators

  • Midwives who are passionate about mentoring

  • Midwives who are passionate about scaling up midwifery in California

Perinatal Psychiatry: Treatment during Pregnancy and Postpartum


This virtual course will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders during pregnancy and postpartum. Exposure to psychotropic medications and the consequence of untreated psychiatric disorders must be considered when treating pregnant women, those who may become pregnant during treatment, and those who are breastfeeding. Up to date and comprehensive knowledge is required to help patients make collaborative and individualized treatment decisions. Focused material will be presented on specialized psychotherapies utilized during pregnancy and postpartum, as well as an overview of embryology and obstetrics informing a broad range of care modalities. Evidence to Application Summit: Utilizing low-dose aspirin to reduce pre-eclampsia


Leaders from hospitals, provider groups, public health, community-based organizations and birthing people with lived experience are all invited to attend this FREE program on November 7 from 8 AM - 12 PM. We plan to implement this campaign in target areas with a high risk for

preeclampsia and prematurity rates. Our overarching goal of this Summit is to build out implementation strategies utilizing CMQCC’s soon-to-be-released Hypertension/ Preeclampsia Quality Improvement Toolkit – which supports hospitals in managing labor and delivery patients presenting with high blood pressure; and March of Dimes Low-Dose Aspirin Toolkit – which helps prenatal care providers and allied health professionals increase access, utilization and acceptability of low-dose aspirin during pregnancy to prevent preeclampsia

Preventing Racial and Ethnic Biases During Pandemics and Other Crises

To empower health care personnel to provide equitable care during crises like COVID-19, Diversity Science, a professional services firm focused on accelerating progress towards diversity, equity, and inclusion in health care, has developed three free online training courses tailored to physicians, nurses, and nonclinical frontline staff. Saving the Lives of Moms and Babies

The National Partnership for Women & Families has joined the National Birth Equity Collaborative to produce the Saving the Lives of Moms & Babies series. The 10-part series connects the dots between how different socioeconomic factors affect maternal and infant health, the outsize impact these factors have on Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) communities, and recommendations to effect the change we need to ensure all moms and babies thrive. Saving the Lives of Moms & Babies: Addressing Racism and Socioeconomic Influencers of Health presents a ground-breaking summary of how racism directly affects the bodies of moms and babies.


Inclusive Healthcare in Perinatal Nursing


Identifying and rectifying our own biases allows us to improve the outcomes of our patients. This online session will explore challenges related to implicit bias, health equity, disparities, and health care outcomes, as well as strategies and recommendations for addressing implicit bias to achieve the goal of health equity in perinatal healthcare. Wayachi Seed Grant


The Wayachi Seed Grant is a $5,000 scholarship awarded to an ACNM member. The Project proposals must have a primary focus on meeting the direct needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), with preference to projects that address the Wayachi Fund purposes described on the foundation website. BIPOC/people of color applicants from diverse backgrounds are eligible and encouraged to apply, including midwives (CNM/CM/CPM/LM), students, retirees, community groups, advocates, and other health professionals who work with under-resourced BIPOC/people of color communities. Jeanne Raisler International Award for Midwifery


The ACNM Foundation announces the $3500 Jeanne Raisler International Award for Midwifery, a professional development grant that supports midwives to become involved in global midwifery. No past international experience is required. Apply by October 15th, 2021.

Public Health Institute


The Public Health Institute is seeking a part-time nurse abstractor with labor and delivery experience to gather data from medical records and create Case Summary narratives for committee review. This is a part-time position (hours can vary from 6-10 hours per week) with flexible scheduling. Work can be done remotely. Candidates must own a password-protected computer (PC or Mac, not Chromebook). The CA-Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review is an enhanced surveillance project started in 2006 to identify possible reasons for the rise in maternal mortality, increasing racial/ethnic disparities, and to develop evidence-based clinical, policy and programmatic interventions. In-depth medical record and coroner report review is conducted to identify contributing factors and quality improvement opportunities to ultimately decrease maternal mortality in California.
