The CNMA Health Policy Committee & Workgroup
The Health Policy Committee advocates for the people we serve, our communities and the midwifery profession. We aim to support legislation and policy that increases access to reproductive health care, especially care by midwives for all Califonians. We aim to support legislation and policy that will reduce health disparities for BIPOC, trans and non-bianary, LGBQ, people with disabilities, poor people and others impacted by systemic inequalities. We aim to support legislation and policy that removes barriers to midwifery care in CA.
SB1237 Implementation: In September of 2020 Governor Newsom signed SB1237 into law, removing “physician supervision” from Californian Certified Nurse Midwives. Learn more about how this change will impact your practice and what CNMA is doing to ensure that the bill achieves our goal of increasing access to midwives through California.
SB 64 Momnibus (Skinner): This year, CNMA is co-sponsoring SB 65, a bill that re-imagines maternal health in California. This is bill is a large and first-of-its-kind "momnibus" style bill with multiple sections that aim to improve outcomes for birthing people and to reduce racial disparities in birth outcomes. You can find out more information here. This bill has a midwifery education component! If passed, the new law would provide grant funding to midwifery schools in California who prioritize admitting underrepresented groups, people from underserved communities, and who place students in areas with limited maternity care providers
Take Action Now! Whenever we have a call to action for supporting reproductive health, rights and justice in CA it will be shared out on this page and via social media. Follow CNMA on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to stay up to date on policy and other topics important to midwives in California!
