MEET: Maria Kammerer
LOCATION: Kaiser Redwood City
I was born in Marin County, but lived in Michigan and Spain before settling in Sacramento with my family as a teenager. I graduated from California State University Sacramento with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Humanities in 1990. After graduation, I spent 8 years traveling our beautiful State as a public relations officer for the USDI Bureau of Land Management. My heart, though, was with pregnant and birthing women. While working on my prerequisites for midwifery school, I attended births as a doula and soaked up learning at California Midwife Association events. I even earned a Women’s Health certificate from the Acupressure Institute in Berkeley. In 2000, I returned to school to pursue my dream of becoming a midwife and received a Masters of Science in Nursing, specializing in nurse-midwifery, from the University of California, San Francisco.
I worked for several years as a full-scope midwife for Sutter Health in Vallejo before joining the nurse-midwife staff at Kaiser Permanente Hayward/San Leandro, and in 2014 transferred to Kaiser Redwood City where I am thrilled to be a part of a passionate, dedicated obstetric team and a practice that has one of the lowest c-section creates in the country. My passion continues to be supporting women and their families through the transformative experience of pregnancy and birth.
I am also passionate about supporting our profession and have served at times as the president of the CNMA Bay Area chapter, CNMA secretary, and most recently, CNMA Internal Communications Chair.
In my free time I enjoy traveling, baking and rooting for Bay Area sports teams with my husband and two boys.
